Steps Taken By India For The Indigenous Production Of The Semiconductors

In recent days’ time, the Indian Government had laid a very high emphasis on the production of Semiconductors in an indigenous manner, under the ‘Make In India’ Program. Well, this progressive approach of the Modi Government is something that will help the local market to grow and bring much cash flow to the country. It is an absolute delight to see our PM Shri Narendra Modi following the philosophy of ‘Think Local & Act Global’ as indigenous production in every sector will develop our local sector and make us globally vibrant. Semiconductors hold great value in the current era due to their use in all vital industries. Therefore, depending upon the imports of Semiconductors will never allow India to fully flourish in the 21st Century!

Fortunately, we have a Prime Minister who is visionary enough to understand the significance of Semiconductors and the benefits of having indigenous production set up for Semiconductors. Ever since the year 2020, the Modi Government has taken several measures to encourage the production of Semiconductors on Indian soil, which we shall be covering in this write-up. However, before diving deep into the steps taken by India for the indigenous production of Semiconductors, let us first have a look at the significance of the Semiconductors. Semiconductors are used in a variety of the telecommunications devices, such as cell phones, modems, and routers. They are also used in the production of fiber-optic cables, which are a key component of high-speed internet networks.

Automotive

Semiconductors are used in the production of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Electric Vehicles (EVs). They help in managing and controlling the powertrain and battery management systems of the vehicles!

 Renewable Energy

Semiconductors are used in the production of solar cells, which convert sunlight into electricity. They are also used in the production of power electronic devices that help to manage and control the flow of electricity in renewable energy systems.

Semiconductors are used in the production of medical equipment such as X-ray machines, CT scanners, and MRI machines. They also find applications in the production of implantable medical devices such as pacemakers!

Well, as we can see that the Semiconductors are essential for the functioning of modern technology and their significance cannot be overstated. As technology continues to advance, the demand for Semiconductors will only continue to grow therefore, going for the indigenous production of the Semiconductors is a very wise step by the Modi Government. Fortunately, the Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has taken several steps to boost the semiconductor manufacturing industry in the country. The government recognizes the importance of this sector in driving the growth of the Indian economy and making the country self-reliant in terms of technology!

Vital Measures taken by India, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi for the Indigenous Production of the Semiconductors –

1) One of the major steps taken by the Modi Government is the launch of the National Policy on Electronics (NPE) in 2019. The policy aims to increase the electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector’s share in the country’s GDP to 5% by 2025. It also aims to create employment opportunities for around 10 million people in the ESDM sector. The policy also provides various incentives to attract investments in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, such as tax exemptions and subsidies.

2) In line with the NPE, the government also launched the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the ESDM sector. The scheme offers financial incentives to companies that invest in the production of electronic components, including semiconductors. The government has earmarked a budget of Rs. 40,950 crores for the PLI scheme, which is expected to attract investments worth Rs. 1.45 lakh crores in the ESDM sector!

3) The government has also set up the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) to promote the production of technical textiles in the country. The mission aims to increase the share of technical textiles in the total textile production from the current 5% to 15% by 2025. Technical textiles are an important component in the manufacturing of semiconductors, and the NTTM is expected to boost the production of these materials in India.

4) In addition to these measures, the government is also taking steps to improve the skill development and training infrastructure in the country. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched the National Program on Electronics and IT Skills (NPEITS) to train around 5 million people in the ESDM sector. The government is also working on setting up an electronic manufacturing cluster (EMC) in every state to provide infrastructure and support services to companies in the ESDM sector!
